Shoppers have converged on Canton because it is the second Thursday of May, meaning it is time for the Spring Flea Market & Crafts Show, which is one of the largest markets in the south. The Market Gallery is located on the northeast corner of the historic courthouse square, which is always reserved for vendors with handmade items. Additional exhibitors from all over the country are located along East Fulton and Peace Streets, at the Old Jail Museum, and behind City Hall. The market, which began in 1965, happens twice a year returning in the fall on the second Thursday of October.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi has filed a federal lawsuit against the Madison County Sheriff's Department. The plaintiffs are black men and women. The ACLU charges all were unconstitutionally searched, detained, or arrested. The suit claims the department targets or profiles blacks in their policing practices.
Mississippi State University's Kaelin Kersh, of Pearl, a member of the school's track team, died in a crash that occurred Sunday at the intersection of Mayhew Road and Highway 182 near Starkville. Kaelin was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with a Mississippi Highway Patrol SUV. A vigil for Kersh was held at Pearl High School and there was another observance for her at MSU earlier this week.
